It takes a herculean effort for the nose to get through all that to any semblance of the whiskey below, which only reads like a faint oak note. Underneath the overwhelming candied cinnamon is vanilla and sugar. The nose on Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire is sweet candy red hots, atomic fireballs, and Hot Tamales – pure candy in a glass. Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire (35% ABV / 70 Proof, $22) – labeled as a “cinnamon liqueur blended with Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey”, Tennessee Fire is first and foremost a cinnamon liqueur. Unlike Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, which seemed to be more of a gateway drug to Jack Daniel’s core offerings, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire seems to be much more about marketshare and growth for the company than providing another conduit to draw new customers to the core brand. For all intents and purposes, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire is a direct assault on Fireball’s turf and seems custom built from the ground up to quickly take over that market share. Fireball was the same kind of runaway hit that Tennessee Honey was and helped firmly establish the flavored whiskey market. Prior to the release of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, from a sales point of view, the benchmark flavored whiskey was Sazerac’s Fireball Whiskey. Jack Daniel’s did bring out a seasonal offering, Jack Daniel’s Winter Jack Tennessee Cider, but that was more of an import of an international offering than a new flavor innovation.

With the huge success that Jack Daniel’s had with Tennessee Honey, it’s kind of strange that the brand waited three full years before releasing another major flavor. Three years later, Jack Daniel’s is back with another major flavored whiskey release, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire. We also anticipate it being a bridge to whiskey for those who’ve never explored the category. Jack Daniel’s has simply hit a home run with this liqueur and we’re sure it will win a lot of people who are drinking or shooting other liqueurs. The Jack Daniel’s folks recommend drinking Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey chilled, which only serves to make it even easier to drink – it’s the kind of thing that leads to drinking half a bottle in a sitting. We were very surprised when we find out that this liqueur is 70 proof, as there is almost no alcohol burn whatsoever in the spirit. It manages to be sweet without stickiness, and it balances that sweetness with a lovely amount of cinnamon and spice. Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey is one of the most drinkable whiskey-based liqueurs we’ve ever had. There’s absolutely no heat in the finish, and for a sweet honey liqueur, it impressively doesn’t leave a heavy residue on the palate. The cinnamon fades in the mid-palate and gives way to a subtle milk chocolate note which lingers after a fairly swift finish. There’s more spice here than heat and the spice is absolutely dialed in. The entry opens with clear honey notes which is quickly backed up by a perfect level of cinnamon. The nose is sweet and spicy, with solid cinnamon notes and a light floral undertone.
